SkypeNames.exe Recommendation : |
Down to end-user requirements.
In the early days of this feature, July to September 2009, this add-on used to crash often as well as consume excessive amounts of memory and processor time. At the time of writing, 11-Feb-2010, this add-on is much better behaved although it still occasionally uses significant amounts of memory (see below) and it still slows the rendering of web pages somewhat, which is normal given that it has to scan every single web page you access in order to see if that web page has a telephone number or Skype Name on it, and given that a majority of web pages do have telephone numbers on them (in the footer or in the top right-hand corner), then this add-on is constantly working whenever you access the Internet. How often, on a day to day basis, do you find yourself calling a number that is on a web page you visit ? Is it so difficult to simply write down a number you want to call on the odd occasion that you want to call a number from a web page ?
Thus, if you have a very fast Internet line (16Mb or above) as well as a fast PC, then you may not experience too much of a noticeable Internet performance impact. If you have a medium to slow Internet connection, and a PC that has seen better days, or is not up to present days specifications, then you may want to consider uninstalling this add-on, which you can do from "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel in Windows XP, or "Programs and Features" in Vista and Windows 7.
If you do not use either Internet Explorer or Firefox as your web browser (e.g. you use SeaMonkey, Opera, Google Chrome, etc...), then you most definitely want to uninstall this SkypeNames add-on.
This background add-on normally uses anything from 4Mb to 25Mb of memory. |
