Microsoft IntelliType Pro. As per Microsoft's own description : "IntelliType Pro software enables you to customize the unique features of your Microsoft keyboard to fit your needs. With IntelliType Pro software you can reassign many of the keys to open a program, file, or Web page, or to perform commands, such as Find, Show Desktop, or other application-specific functions. You can disable keys you sometimes press accidentally, like CAPS LOCK, and modify keyboard settings, such as updated horizontal scrolling and zoom slider performance. IntelliType Pro software even offers extended application support, as well as biometrics support for advanced identity management. If you have a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard, you will need to have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed.". |

If you use some of the IntelliType features mentioned above, then you need to leave this task running for the features to be available with your Microsoft keyboard. At the time of writing, 24-Jun-2006, there are serious issues with some of the later versions of IntelliType when used with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) on laptops attached to an external monitor or display device such as an overhead projector. Specifically, the fonts and display get corrupted when you switch between the laptop display and the external monitor or projector. Thus, if IntelliType is only on your PC because your PC came with it or you loaded it thinking that you needed it for your keyboard to work (which you do not unless it is a wireless/Bluetooth keyboard), and you are not using its features, then you may want to think about getting rid of it. If you are thinking of disabling IntelliType, first disable it on the Startups tab and see if your PC is working fine with that change. If it is then you can continue as is with ITYPE disabled on the Startups tab, which is perfectly fine, or you may consider uninstalling IntelliType completely through the "Add\Remove Programs" icon in the Control Panel. This task normally uses around 8Mb of memory. Remember at all times, however, that if your mouse/PC came with IntelliType then you can always download the latest version of IntelliType from the Microsoft Downloads website if you feel you are experiencing problems with IntelliType. |
